Working together, what can the Clarence do to enhance our community well-being and build resilience?

by Executive Support, over 7 years ago

Consider our intention: Our intention is for our creative valley cultures, rich in history and diversity, to be supported by good information, education, health, recreation and other services, providing opportunities for quality lifestyles involving a sense of well-being in which we value our communities and each other.

    Maybe we could do something similar to Sydney and have a sculpture by the sea event.

    * Sustain wild-life and bush habitat.
    * Support local businesses more.
    * Council should be more pro-active.
    * Think more about D.A's and stop overcrowding and overdevelopment.

    * Give people jobs
    * Make development easier
    * Once a decision is made "see it through quickly"

    1. Encourage development of more (quality) housing suitable for older residents who want to downsize and for singles or couples starting out. Courtyard homes and single storied terraces would be a good idea. However - they need to be sprinkled through the community (not put all in one place to produce ghetto-like areas), have easy access to bus services, and all have street views (not packed sideways into a narrow block like sardines where the only view is of a fence a few feet away and you can hear what your neighbours are saying through the wall).

    2. Encourage volunteering. eg Start educating kids in High School about the need for and benefits of volunteering - and get them each to do some work experience as a volunteer.

    3. Ensure that there is plenty of accessible home help for the elderly - so they can remain in their own homes for as long as possible (reducing pressure on aged care accommodation).

    In the late 1950's and early 1960's Grafton was acknowledged as the "City of Trees" since then it has become the town of putative little shrubs. Plant more substancial street trees.

    Have rangers patrolling our town streets day and night for better security, stopping drunken and drugged misbehaviour and house burglaries and vandalism. Both rangers and police are seldom in evidence and hardly respond when called.

    Yamba should be watched closely and decisions thought through thoroughly to ensure that it does not become too big for its compacity. People love and live in Yamba for its "small town" feeling and natural way of life. Pleasing visitors and providing them with what you see in the city is not going to make them return, they come to visit for the "small town" feeling and to relax, to be away from the hustle and bustle of the big smoke.

    If welcome, more working together with indigenous communities – sharing and exchanging skills, art and knowledge, resources, encouraging indigenous youth to develop their potential art, dance and sport to stay ‘on track’. Health and environmental education, indigenous youth surf ed.

    Better specialist health services for an ageing population.

    * A river walk in Maclean.
    * More street lights.
    * Provide better facilities (toilets, showers, changing rooms) at Yamba beaches and keep them in good order.

    All must endeavour to establish balanced aged structure through the community to prevent an aged community predominating.

    Encourage younger people to train and find employment in the valley so the balance is secured and the aged groups not predominating.
