Here are just a few shots from the hours of motion camera footage we have on file, captured by citizen scientists across the Clarence Valley. I spy a koala!
There are some welcome sightings and a few concerning visitors. Knowing where native animals are in our landscapes helps us to conserve them. It also helps to know what feral animals are in the landscapes.
Koalas in the Clarence
Clarence Valley Council is working to protect the iconic koala through community engagement and on ground actions. Council are seeking citizen scientists to take part in recording koala sightings within the Clarence Valley.
Miss Starry's Release
A nine year old koala dubbed ‘Miss Starry’ returned to Waterview Heights on the afternoon of Tuesday 11/9/18 after recovering from being hit by a car. She was picked up by a WIRES carer and assessed by a local vet, then sent to Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital where she was also treated for chlamydia – a serious and potentially fatal infection that causes blindness and internal infections if not treated. Her last few weeks have been at the Friends of Koala Nursery in Lismore where she’s been regaining strength for her release.
Another koala was released the same day; ‘Ashby David’ was found on the ground in Ashby and was sent to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for treatment for chlamydia.
Clarence koalas are under threat from fire, cars, dogs and disease. WIRES carers play a big role in caring for injured animals, and koalas need your help too. With funding from the NSW Environmental Trust, CVC is running a project to support our koalas. Register where you’ve seen a koala and help us plan for Clarence koalas into the future – with your assistance we can help koalas remain safe and healthy for the long term.
