How will names be assessed?

Naming of a regional cultural facility helps shape our local identity, as well as positioning the venue to support future funding and programming.

In selecting a name, we will be considering the community’s ideas alongside the following criteria:

    • purpose and positioning of the centre
    • connection to place
    • longevity
    • practicality of use (e.g. length vs. acronym)
    • flexibility for future management, funding and sponsorship
    • cultural sensitivity
    • legislation (and availability)
    • distinctive vs. alignment with similar regional venues
    • tone and connection with community

What are the potential uses of the new Maclean Community Precinct?

Here are some potential uses to consider in naming, however, the facility has been built as a flexible space for the community.

    • Local and regional performing arts, including theatre, dance, music and choirs.
    • Rehearsal and workshops, including rehearsal, development and performance space.
    • Regional, state and national touring productions, currently with limited suitable options in the northern rivers.
    • Community and cultural performances, including multicultural, aboriginal and intergenerational groups.
    • Schools, training providers and youth programs, supporting ceremonies, education, performance and creative skill development.
    • Festivals and cultural events, providing an indoor anchor venue to complement outside programming.
    • Industry, including speakers, business events, hospitality and tourism or regional award ceremonies.
    • Comedy, from national touring to local open mic-nights.
    • Film and television, from independent showings to curated film festivals.
    • Government or civic events, including presentations, ceremonies or performances.
    • Private hire.

What happens after I submit a name suggestion?

The project team will consider all options received and assess each submission against

Were there is more than one name that scores high on the criteria, we will share this with the community to tell us which name they prefer.

A report will then be presented to Council for adoption of the new name.

Do I need to be a resident of Maclean to participate?

No, the Maclean Community Precinct is there for all residents of the Clarence Valley.

If you live outside but have a connection to the Clarence Valley, we also would like to hear from you.

What should be considered when thinking about good place names?

    A good place name should:

    1. be clear and unambiguous
    2. be appropriate to the area’s physical, historical or cultural character
    3. reflect the relationship between people and that place
    4. contribute to the reputation of the region
    5. be consistent with other places of similar use.
